Earlier this week Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre was announced as the site for the first centralised British Synchro High Performance Centre. The facilities, which are managed by Aspire Defence, will be used by Britain’s elite synchronised swimmers in the run up to London 2012.
At the launch event on Tuesday, some of these Olympic hopefuls gave a demonstration of the talent that will be nurtured in the new state-of-the-art training centre. Management of this centre forms part of an £8bn facilities management and construction project which will provide new and improved accommodation for 18,500 Army personnel at Aldershot and across Salisbury Plain.
Speaking at the launch, Kath Cortizo from Aspire Defence said: “We are delighted that British Synchro has chosen our facilities for its first ever centralised High Performance Centre. It's a ringing endorsement of the centre and all the hard work that goes into running these truly world class facilities.”
The partnership between British Synchro, Aspire Defence and the British Army means that currently eleven of the country’s top synchro athletes, including British duo Jenna Randall and Olivia Allison, are now training at the centre in Aldershot. British Synchro Performance Director,
Biz Price, said: “We are excited to be training in a world class environment at the Aldershot Garrison run by Aspire Defence. For the first time in British Synchro’s history, we have athletes training full time at a centralised High Performance Centre. This will now enable us to compete at the highest level and provide the best preparation for 2012 Olympic Games where the athletes will be competing in front of their home crowd.”
